How to Start Mantra Sadhana (Beginner-Friendly Step-by-Step)
Share
If you’re new, don’t overcomplicate it. Consistency beats intensity.
Step 1: Choose One Mantra and Stay With It
Pick a mantra that resonates with your ishta devata (chosen deity) or your spiritual path. Avoid changing mantras frequently—depth comes from repetition over time.
If you received a mantra from a Guru, stick to that. If you haven’t, start with a simple, safe, devotional mantra and build discipline first.
Step 2: Fix a Time and Place
Early morning is ideal, but your best time is the time you’ll actually do it daily.
Create a small, clean corner for practice.
Step 3: Start Small (108 Once Daily)
A simple start:
-
1 mala (108) per day for 21 days
Then increase gradually: -
2 malas
-
4 malas
-
8 malas (advanced consistency)
Step 4: Add a Simple Sankalpa (Intention)
Example:
“May this mantra sadhana purify my mind and strengthen my devotion.”
Step 5: Close Properly
Sit quietly for 1–2 minutes after japa. Let the vibration settle. Offer gratitude.
Best Japa Count: 108, 1008, or More?
In mantra practice, numbers are used to build discipline and spiritual momentum:
-
108 = standard daily baseline
-
1008 = deeper sādhana, often for special phases
-
11 malas / 21 malas / 41 days / 48 days = structured spiritual commitments
But the real “count” is not only beads—it’s quality + consistency.
